Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga — dunes, camps and silence
Morocco's great dune seas sit at Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) and M'Hamid (Erg Chigaga). Both deliver camel trains at sunset, star-filled skies and luxury tented camps with real beds and hot showers — Erg Chebbi is easier to reach, Erg Chigaga is wilder and quieter. Getting there is part of the trip: the Draa Valley, Ait Benhaddou and the Dades gorges are all on the route.

Best time to visit
October–April. Midwinter nights are genuinely cold — camps supply heavy blankets. Avoid July–August daytime heat.
Getting there & around
Merzouga is roughly 9 hours from Marrakech and 7 from Fes; we split it over two days with overnight stops. Erg Chigaga requires a 4x4 transfer from M'Hamid.
Where to stay
One or two nights in a desert camp, plus kasbah hotels in Skoura, Ouarzazate or the Dades on the drive.
Eating & drinking
Camp dinners of tagine and bread baked in the sand, plus date and olive stops along the Draa Valley.
Local tips
- Pack a scarf, warm layer and a head torch.
- Phone signal is patchy; camps typically have limited solar-powered Wi-Fi.
- Two nights out from Marrakech is the realistic minimum for Erg Chebbi.
