Best time to visit

April–June and September–October. Winters are cold and wet by Moroccan standards; summers are dry and hot inland.

Getting there & around

Fes–Saïs Airport is 20 minutes away and the Casablanca/Tangier high-speed train links are excellent. Inside the medina it is walking only — a guide is genuinely worth it on day one.

A dar or riad inside Fes el-Bali, close to Bab Boujloud or the Batha quarter, so you can retreat from the lanes in minutes.

Local tips

Lanes are steep and uneven — pack shoes with grip.
Photograph the tanneries from a terrace; shop staff will offer mint to mask the smell.
